If you’re looking for an easy afternoon or night out in Lexington, the Distillery District is it. Show up, start walking, and the place handles the rest.
The Lexington Distillery District sits just west of downtown on Manchester Street, only a few minutes from Rupp Arena. But once you turn onto Manchester, it feels different. The buildings are old brick warehouses with big metal doors that open up when the weather’s nice. You can walk from place to place without getting back in your car. It feels industrial because it is.
The whole area grew out of the historic James E. Pepper Distillery site, where bourbon was being made as far back as 1879. The property sat empty for years before it was brought back to life, and when it was, they kept the old brick and warehouse style rather than making it look brand new. What you’re walking through is real Lexington history: casual, relaxed, and a little rough around the edges in the best way.
On weekends, you’ll see people starting early with a bourbon and brewery crawl, sharing pizza on a patio, friends meeting up before a concert, and families walking around. You don’t have to plan every minute. You just bounce from one spot to the next.
1. James E. Pepper Distillery. If you want the full experience, book a tour. The tours walk you through the history of the site and how the bourbon is made. You’ll see the old brick buildings up close and understand why the whole district grew up around this property. If you don’t want a full tour, you can grab a cocktail in the tasting room. It’s a relaxed setting where you can sit, talk, and take your time. Even if bourbon isn’t your thing, the building alone gives you a strong sense of place.
2. Ethereal Brewing. Ethereal is one of the main beer spots in the district with a very easygoing feel. Big tables inside, plenty of room to stand and hang out, and when the weather’s nice, people spill outside, and the whole area comes alive. The beer list has a mix of lighter and heavier options, so you’ll find something that fits. It works for a quick drink before dinner or for staying a while. This is the kind of place where you don’t get rushed out.
3. Goodfellas Pizzeria. Goodfellas makes the night easy. You walk in, order a slice or a whole pie, and you’re set. The slices are big, so most people grab one or two and call it good. There’s a full bar, so you can pair your food with a drink without going anywhere else. It sits right in the middle of the district, which makes it a great meeting spot if your group is arriving at different times. The patio is popular when the weather’s nice and gives you a good view of the foot traffic.
4. The Burl. The Burl is one of Lexington’s most reliable small music venues. The building began as a Texaco loading dock in 1926, then became a venue in 2016, and its history fits perfectly with the warehouse feel of the district. Inside, it’s an intimate space where you’re close to the stage. They bring in touring acts and local bands, so there’s always a good mix. You can walk in, enjoy a show, and walk right back out into the district to keep the night going.
5. Crank and Boom Ice Cream. Crank and Boom has become a regular stop for many people after bourbon, beer, pizza, or a concert. The space is bright and welcoming, the flavors rotate, and it’s a simple way to wrap up the evening. Grab a cone or a cup, step outside, and take a few more minutes to enjoy the area before heading home.
The simple plan: Start with a cocktail at James E. Pepper. Walk to Ethereal for a beer. Grab pizza at Goodfellas. Catch a show at The Burl. End with ice cream at Crank and Boom. That’s a full afternoon or evening, all within a short walk.
A few tips: If you want it calmer, go earlier in the day on weekends. Late afternoons and evenings are the busiest. Dress simply, jeans and sneakers are perfect. And if you’re already headed downtown for something near Rupp Arena, the Distillery District is close enough to add to the same night without making a separate trip.
Why do locals keep coming back? Because it feels real. It’s connected to Lexington’s working past. The brick, the old rail lines, the warehouse look, none of it was erased. It was reused. That gives the whole area a character you can’t fake.
