Are you ready to have some fun in Lexington, Kentucky? It’s always a good idea to plan ahead so you don’t miss out on the best experiences this city has to offer. Sure, Lexington is famous for horses and bourbon, but there’s so much more waiting here.
I’ve been around this city long enough to know what’s truly worth your time. Whether you’re a local looking for a weekend plan or just passing through, here are my top 10 fun things to do in Lexington that you’ll regret missing:
1. Kentucky Horse Park. We’re not called the Horse Capital of the World for nothing. The Kentucky Horse Park is an all-in-one experience with live horse shows, museums about the history of horses in Kentucky, and even interactive exhibits where you can learn how jockeys train.
One of my favorite parts is watching the Hall of Champions presentation. These are retired racehorses who’ve won major titles and now get to show off for visitors. It’s a rare and up-close way to experience these champions.
If you’re traveling with kids or just want to try something new, go for a pony ride or hop on a horse-drawn carriage. There’s no better way to appreciate how deeply horses are rooted in our culture here.
2. Bourbon Distillery Tours. When you’re in Kentucky, you’re in bourbon country. Lexington has some of the best distillery tours. Places like Woodford Reserve and Town Branch give you full-blown experiences. You’ll see how bourbon is made, from mash and fermentation to the aging process in those iconic barrels.
These tours aren’t just for bourbon nerds either. You’ll learn about the history and the craft, and walk away with a whole new appreciation for what’s in your glass. And yes, the tastings at the end are worth every penny. Cheers to that!
3. The Arboretum State Botanical Garden. Need to recharge? This 100-acre garden is a peaceful haven with themed spaces like the fragrance garden and a 2-mile walking trail. It’s especially beautiful in the spring and fall. It’s the perfect spot to clear your head, take a walk, or sit on a bench and enjoy the quiet.
4. Rupp Arena Basketball Game. Home of the Kentucky Wildcats, Rupp Arena offers one of the most electrifying college basketball experiences in the country. Even if you’re not a big basketball person, the atmosphere is electric.
The roar of the crowd, the sea of blue and white, the chants you can’t help but join in, it’s a one-of-a-kind experience. Tickets can go fast, especially for big games, so check the schedule ahead of time. If you can’t catch a game, take a tour of the arena to soak in the history.
5. Keeneland Racecourse. Keeneland captures the soul of Lexington. It’s more than a racetrack that shows you a slice of Kentucky tradition. During the racing season in April and October, the energy is contagious. People dress up. You’ll see ladies in hats and gents in sports coats, sipping mint juleps and cheering on their favorites.
Even off-season, you can head there in the morning to watch the horses train. Grab a coffee and watch the sunrise over the track
6. Downtown Lexington Eats and Drinks. Downtown Lexington is a foodie’s dream. You’ll see local dives to trendy spots fit for whatever you’re craving. If you’re into brunch, there are tons of cozy options. For dinner, try places like Coles 735 Main for elevated Southern cuisine. Their bone-in filet is one of the best I’ve had.
If you’re in the mood for barbecue, Blue Door Smokehouse has unbeatable brisket. I’d like to add that the craft cocktail scene here is Top-notch. Places like Ona and other downtown bars never disappoint. The best part of this is that downtown is walkable. You can bar-hop, check out live music, or stumble into a pop-up market.
7. Triangle Park. Right in the heart of the city, Triangle Park is a local favorite. It’s a great place to relax by the fountains, grab a coffee, or come winter, lace up for some ice skating. Whether you’re shopping nearby or just wandering, it’s a great stop.
8. Horseback Riding in the Countryside. This is a true bucket list Kentucky experience—horseback riding through the Bluegrass. There are plenty of stables and outfitters just outside town ready to set you up, whether you’re a beginner or seasoned rider. The rolling hills, stone fences, and thoroughbred farms paint the exact picture you think of when you imagine Kentucky.
9. Ashland, The Henry Clay Estate. History lovers, this one’s for you. Ashland was the home of Henry Clay, one of America’s most influential political figures. The mansion is beautifully preserved, and the tour guides do a fantastic job of bringing the past to life.
You’ll learn about Clay and get a glimpse of life in 1800s Kentucky. Plus, the grounds are gorgeous and perfect for a quiet stroll after your tour.
10. McConnell Springs. This peaceful park is actually the spot where Lexington began. With nature trails, wildlife, and historic signage, it’s an underrated gem right in the middle of the city. A great way to end your visit on a quiet, meaningful note.
Whatever brings you to Lexington, these ten stops will help you experience the best of what the city has to offer.
