“If budget isn’t a concern, where’s the best place to live in Lexington?” That’s a question I get a lot, so I decided to break down six of the best areas in and around Lexington and what makes each one stand out.

1. Southwest Lexington. This area is calm, quiet, and features homes built in the 1980s and 1990s. You’ll find wide streets and mature trees in neighborhoods like Stonewall and Dogwood Trace. Many of these homes have been updated with modern kitchens and nicer finishes; some even have pools and large backyards.

It’s close to parks like Shillito Park and shopping at The Summit, making it easy to run errands without driving too far. This area might be a good fit if you’re looking for peace and privacy and don’t mind a home that’s a little older or not quite cookie-cutter.

However, if you’re hoping for something brand new or modern, this probably isn’t the spot for you. It’s more laid-back and slower-paced, perfect for those who want space and a simple lifestyle.

2. Palomar. This neighborhood feels like a well-established, clean, and well-kept part of West Lexington. Most homes were built in the 1990s or early 2000s. They are brick, practical, and the neighborhood is quiet. People walk their dogs, and kids ride their bikes; it just feels easy.

You’re close to Palomar Center and The Summit, meaning groceries, restaurants, and everyday shopping are all nearby. If you want a nice home in a low-traffic neighborhood and prefer being close to conveniences but away from the crowds, this might be the perfect place for you.

However, if you’re looking for something trendier or with a stronger sense of community or nightlife, this area might lack that energy. It’s comfortable and easy, but not the most exciting.

3. Hamburg Area. This neighborhood is all about convenience and new construction. If you want a house that’s move-in ready with a modern floor plan, granite countertops, and a big open kitchen, you’ll probably like it here. Most homes were built in the 2010s or newer, and you’ll find neighborhoods like Summerfield and Tuscany just minutes from big stores like Costco, Target, and Best Buy.

This area works well if you like having everything close by, whether it’s shopping, restaurants, or the interstate. If you’re looking for a quieter, more traditional neighborhood, Hamburg can feel a bit busy and commercial. It’s super convenient, but it might lack a personal or connected vibe unless you really make an effort.

“Finding the right neighborhood is about lifestyle, not just price.”

4. Beaumont. This is one of the most popular places to live in Lexington, and it’s easy to see why. The homes are large, well-kept, and built mainly in the early 2000s. There’s a neighborhood YMCA, parks, restaurants, and shops all within the community. Many families move here specifically for the schools; Rosa Parks Elementary, Beaumont Middle School, and Dunbar High School are among the top-rated in the city.

If you’re looking for a neighborhood that feels active, organized, and family-friendly, this could be a great fit. It works well for those who value walkability and want their kids to grow up near friends.

However, if you prioritize quiet over activity or don’t want to feel like you’re living in a master-planned community, this might feel a bit too structured. Some people love it, while others feel it’s not their pace.

5. Jessamine County. Just south of Lexington, this area is all about space and privacy. You’ll find large lots, long driveways, and even properties with horse barns or wooded acreage. It feels very different from the neighborhoods we’ve discussed so far. Many residents work from home or don’t mind a longer drive to get to town. It’s peaceful, scenic, and slower-paced.

This might be a great fit if you’ve always dreamed of living in the country but still want to be close enough to go out to dinner in Lexington. However, if you want quick access to stores, short drives to school, or close neighbors, it likely isn’t for you. This area is best suited for those who want space and solitude.

6. Chevy Chase. This is the best overall if you’re looking for a mix of location, charm, and walkability. The area is right next to downtown and the University of Kentucky’s campus. You can walk to coffee shops, restaurants, boutiques, and bars.

The homes are older, many built in the 1900s, but have been updated with modern finishes while retaining their character. It’s zoned for Cassidy Elementary, Morton Middle School, and Henry Clay High, some of the city’s strongest public schools. Chevy Chase works best for those who want to be in the middle of everything. If you value a front porch, the ability to walk to dinner, and living in a home with some history, this is your place.

However, if you’re not into older homes or want more space and newer construction, this probably isn’t the right fit. It’s charming, but it’s not for everyone.

So if price isn’t the issue, it really comes down to lifestyle. Want peace and land? Look south toward Jessamine County. Want top schools and communities? Beaumont’s your place. Want modern builds near shopping? Hamburg works. And if you’re into walkability and character, Chevy Chase is a favorite.
